Disclosure is a short notice next to an ad promoting an advertiser’s product that reveals the fact that the webmaster is affiliated with the advertiser and receives a commission for every referred client. Publishing an advertising disclosure is required by the Federal Trade Commission regulations according to which the absence of the disclosure is defined as deception.
Advertising disclosure can be included in any medium that is used for product promotion including website, social media posts, videos, podcasts, etc.
A disclosure notice serves the following purposes:
- Explaining the concept of affiliate marketing
- Identifying the link as an affiliate one
- Mentioning the fact that webmaster receives commissions
