iFrame is short for Inline Frame and it allows websites to show the piece of content from another website on the page. Basically, it is a frame within the frame.
Some big examples of iFrames are adding YouTube videos, tweets, Instagram posts to the page. Advertisements can also be embedded on the page. Share buttons to Facebook or Twitter or to creating pins on Pinterest are considered to be iFrames as well.
The biggest benefits of iFrame are:
- making content more engaging
- boosting your social media channels
- providing visible sources of information
- giving low-effort options to share your content on social media
- creating more attractive ads
However, it is sometimes difficult to embed iFrames so that they are displayed properly. iFrames, such as videos, are very heavy and an overload of those will slow down the page significantly. It is recommended against putting iFrames on insecure websites.
