Parallax scrolling is a technique in website design in which both foreground and background are moving. However, the foreground is moving at a faster pace than the background. This creates a 3D effect for the website visitors as they scroll down the website, giving them a more immersive website browsing experience and a sense of depth.
The parallax effect is based on an optical illusion. The human eye typically perceives objects that are closer as being larger than objects that are farther away. Distant objects are also perceived as though they’re moving slowly.
This illusion has been adopted across different mediums into parallax to foster a more realistic effect. The first use of the parallax scrolling effect was in the making of traditional animations and video games.
However, as HTML and CSS continued to advance, the parallax scrolling effect started to evolve into web design until it evolved to the point where it is today.
