A skyscraper is defined as an online ad that is significantly taller than a vertical banner with dimensions 120×240. Skyscraper ads are known for being very tall. Their heights usually range from 500 to 800 pixels while their widths often range from 120 to 160 pixels.
For so long, buyers and sellers did not have a standard skyscraper size to adhere to. Thus, skyscraper ads became the province of large, well-branded sites capable of selling custom advertising packages. However, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced standard sizes for skyscraper ads. These standard sizes are:
- 120×600 for the standard skyscraper, and
- 160×600 for the wide skyscraper
Following the introduction of these standard sizes for skyscraper ads, the ad category became more prominent at advertising networks. Oftentimes people refer to skyscraper ads as skyscraper banners. However, some skyscraper ad examples have mimicked the appearance of a banner by using ad buttons and text combinations.
