A unique user is a user with some unique characteristics that do not repeat, who visited a website within a certain period of time. There is a number of parameters that are considered unique when it comes to identifying a unique user:
- Registration data
- Browser
- IP address
A user is considered unique when the collection of these parameters differs from others. Nevertheless, even if one person visits the site a couple of times using different browsers or computers, such visits are counted as unique.
The user’s computer is usually identified by cookies deposited in the computer’s hard drive. These tiny elements of data can distinguish unique users from the previous clients of a website and therefore are helpful in analyzing the effectiveness of an ad campaign.
Benefits that can be gained from increasing the rate of unique users:
- The price of a site becomes significantly higher if it has good data on unique visits.
- When choosing a site for ad placement, potential advertisers look at the traffic indicators.
