Webspam is used to classify different techniques used to subvert and manipulate search engine algorithms to make a page rank higher than it should on the SERP. Webspam is disruptive to search engine algorithms and annoying for users, so search engines strive to combat it.
Types of Webspam
Boosting and hiding are the two major types of webspam:
Boosting
This includes all actions taken to boost a page’s value through different manipulation techniques.
- Term spamming: This includes manipulations through page title, meta keywords, and meta description.
- URL spamming: Some search engines put some weight on the URL so it can be manipulated.
- Link spamming: Anchor text spamming is a typical example of this since search engines consider anchor texts while ranking. In link spamming, spammers also drop links on websites to increase the page’s value.
Hiding Technique
These techniques make a page rank high, but they’re not noticeable. They are more problematic, and search engines take them more seriously.
- Content hiding: This technique hides terms and links when a browser renders the page. The color scheme is the typical approach, and it makes the necessary element invisible.
- Cloaking: This technique seeks to show a version of the page for users and a different version for search engine spider.
- Redirection: This technique sees the browser automatically redirect a page so that the search engine indexes the page but doesn’t see the page. It’s like a doorway to misdirect users.
